From NJ.com: The mayor of Lakewood is crying anti-Semitism and demanding an apology from Toms River mayor, Thomas Kelaher, who called aggressive real estate buying tactics and other creepy behaviors an “invasion,” and compared them to the ‘blockbusting’ tactics used by real estate agents in the 1960’s . Mayor Kelaher had the good sense to stand for the rights of Toms River residents and offered no apology for his comments, which were obviously not motivated by anti-Semitism.
Lakewood Mayor Menashe Miller on Tuesday demanded the mayor of Toms River apologize for his comments about the need for the ordinance that Miller claims were anti-Semitic against residents of his town, which has a large Orthodox Jewish community.
But Toms River Mayor Thomas Kelaher, insisting his residents have legitimate complaints about pressure to sell their homes, refused to apologize, saying his comments were taken out of context but that they reflected the frustrations of the homeowners.
“It has absolutely nothing to do with anti-Semitism. It’s strictly addressed to the conduct I’ve described here,” said Kelaher, a former prosecutor for Ocean County. “Any way to attribute this to anti-Semitism is absolutely misguided.”
